The original Hardeeville Library began in
what was used as a washhouse from the Argent Lumber Company. The Phillips family had it moved and located by
the town playground. After no longer serving
a purpose as a meeting place for the Scouts, and Jaycees, Bob Baggs, Town Administrator,
and a group of concerned citizens, brought before the town council the need for a
community library.
Money, materials,
books and labor were donated by individuals, businesses, organizations, and churches.
The Hardeeville
Public Library had its official opening on February 27, 1977, with Miss Amanda Jeffers as
librarian. Community response was so great,
that within a few years, a new library was needed.
In July 1979, Mr.
Willie Sauls, Mr. Junior Tysinger, and Mr. Jim Smith donated the lot on the corner of Main
Street and Sauls Court. Mrs. Sandra Rentz,
President of the Hardeeville Friends of the Library at the time, began promoting projects
to raise funds for a new library. In July
1981, the Jasper County Council gave the Friends of the Library a check for $25,000. In May 1982, after much discussion and planning, a
ground breaking took place. In August 1982,
Rep. Juanita White presented a check for $10,000 from the state. Contributions from the state, county, local
government and many friends made it possible for the new library to be completed.
It was dedicated on February 20, 1983 with Mrs. Lillie Maude Terry as the new librarian.
